heart score, lung screening

General Information
Coronary Vascular Disease is the #1 killer in the U.S., claiming nearly 1 million lives.

Who should get a Heart Score Performed?
Heart score is most beneficial for asymptomatic patients (minimum 35 years old) who have risk factors for coronary heart disease. Currently, the test is not appropriate for patients with known coronary artery disease, coronary symptoms or previous coronary procedures.

How is a Heart Score Performed?
The patient is instructed to relax on the CT table with arms overhead. The images are then acquired using a single-breath hold, with an overall scan time of approximately 20-40 seconds. Dress comfortably and avoid metal accessories such as buckles, zippers, and necklaces.

Women are asked to wear a sports bra or change out of their bra for the exam. Sweat suits are the best attire. There is no other special preparation.

What are the benefits of a Heart Score?
The Heart Score technique measures calcium deposits in coronary arteries by taking snapshot images of heart vessels. The amount of calcium detected is related to the probability of underlying atherosclerosis. Positive scores should be discussed with your physician in the context of your risk factor profile.

Management may include modification of lifestyle factors, additional testing, or medications. A zero calcium score implies a very low risk for obstructing coronary lesions and coronary events. While a zero score provides a high level of reassurance, it does not guarantee absence of underlying plaque.
