heart score, lung screening

General Information
Lung cancer is the most common cause of cancer deaths in both sexes in the United States. Overall, survival at 5 years for lung cancer is 13-15%, and has not significantly improved over the last several decades. This year, approximately 170,000 new cases of lung cancer will be diagnosed in the United States.

The number of deaths annually from lung cancer exceeds the total number combined for breast, colorectal and prostate cancer.

Because of advances in helical/spiral CT imaging techniques, screening for lung cancer is being viewed as a promising method of improving survival. MCAI has the most up-to-date imaging technology for detecting lung nodules. The GE Multidetector LightSpeed Plus allows for faster scan time with unsurpassed spatial resolution. Lung Screening is a painless, noninvasive CT (CAT) scan which differs from a traditional CT of the chest by using lower dose techniques. At MCAI, the examination is interpreted by a board-certified radiologist using a computer work station to evaluate lung nodules. Using Multidetector CT, lung cancer nodules can be detected as small 2-3 mm. This size is far smaller than detected Chest X-ray, the traditional diagnostic procedure.

How do I benefit from a Lung Screening?
Historically, lung cancer detection and resection at earlier stages and smaller sizes has produced improved survival. While it follows logically that early detection of lung cancer through screening with Multidetector CT will produce a beneficial effect on survival, this is not yet proven. Such studies are underway with the hopes of verifying this anticipated benefit.

Who should get a Lung Screening?
Patients most likely to benefit from Lung Screening are those 45 and older with risk factors for lung cancer. Smoking is by far the most important risk factor. Other risk factors include second hand smoke and radon/asbestos exposure.

What is the cost of a Lung Screening?
The cost of the CT Lung Screening is $195 ($50 during the month of November 2009) and will be billed to insurance. In the event that the claim is processed as a non-covered exam, MCAI may further discount your out of pocket expense. Annual promotions may reduce this price even further, however, from time to time. (Methods of Payment).

How and When will I receive the results?
A registered nurse from MCAI will notify the patient of the test results by phone, within two business days of the exam. A written copy of the report will also be forwarded to each patient by mail.
